Gesmundo reminded lawyers to always remember their online presence should consistently reflect the dignity of the legal profession as social media permeate almost everyone’s lives. The reminder was made by Gesmundo among many others, as he addressed members of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines — Northern Luzon Region in Tabuk City, Kalinga on 26 November. In his speech, Gesmundo highlighted the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability and its core values of independence, propriety, fidelity, competence, diligence, equality, and accountability, as well as the SC’s vital role in upholding the dignity of the legal profession. The CJ said in today’s technology-driven society, “the responsibilities of legal professionals have expanded beyond traditional physical boundaries and into digital platforms.” “Social media has undeniably permeated our lives and is increasingly becoming intertwined with our personal and professional endeavors,” Gesmundo said. Lawyers were urged to always ensure that their online presence consistently reflects the dignity of the legal profession. “Our everyday actions must reflect the ideals we profess, and we must achieve excellence alongside, and never at the expense of, ethical conduct. At the end of the day, our perceived success in the profession will hold no meaning if it is achieved at the cost of our moral values,” Gesmundo said. The summit had been due to finish on Friday but ran into overtime as negotiators from nearly 200 countries - who must adopt the deal by consensus - tried to reach agreement on a climate funding plan for the next decade. A $250 billion proposal for a deal, drafted by Azerbaijan’s COP29 presidency on Friday, was deemed woefully insufficient by developing countries. It was not clear if the wealthy countries’ revised position had been formally communicated to developing countries at the gathering in the Azerbaijan capital Baku, and whether it would be enough to win their support. The COP29 talks have laid bare the divisions between wealthy governments constrained by tight domestic budgets and developing nations reeling from the soaring costs of storms, floods and droughts fuelled by climate change. Past failures to meet climate finance obligations have also made developing countries mistrustful of new promises. The new goal is intended to replace developed countries’ previous commitment to provide $100 billion in climate finance for poorer nations per year by 2020. That goal was met two years late, in 2022, and expires in 2025. Five sources with knowledge of the closed-door discussions said the EU had agreed it could accept the higher number of $300 billion a year. Two of the sources said the United States, Australia and Britain were also on board. A European Commission spokesperson and an Australian government spokesperson both declined to comment on the negotiations. The US delegation at COP29 and the UK energy ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment. USDA to collect final 2024 crop production and stocks data As the 2024 growing season comes to an end, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will contact producers nationwide to gather final year-end crop production numbers and the amount of grains and oilseeds stored on their farms. At the same time, NASS will survey commercial storage facility operators to determine year-end grain and oilseed stocks. “These surveys are some of the largest and most important surveys conducted by NASS each year,” said Marlo D.
