ps 76 Canadian airline Air Canada is launching a new identification system on Tuesday allowing travellers to get around the airport without reaching for their passport or driver’s license. After travellers upload their information to the Air Canada app on their phone, they’ll be able to go through the airport by simply showing their face, according to the Air Canada webpage dedicated to the new system . They’ll be “hands-free through select airport identity verification checkpoints” without having to take out a boarding pass or government ID, per the airline. “Our digital identification technology takes measurements of the face and creates a numeric representation called a faceprint. The faceprint is then compared to verify a person’s identity,” Air Canada said. It is the first Canadian airline to offer such a service, per a news release about the launch on Tuesday . In a statement over email to the National Post, the airline said the system “streamlines the boarding process, making it faster and convenient for customers, and thereby improving the travel experience.” The new facial ID system launched as a boarding option at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) for nearly all domestic flights, Air Canada said. “Digital identification will allow travellers to quickly and securely verify their identity at key airport touchpoints — similar to unlocking a smartphone or securing transactions,” said President and CEO at YVR Tamara Vrooman, per the news release. “This enhanced process will reduce wait times and provide a more convenient and hassle-free journey.” The system is also available for any travellers eligible to visit Air Canada’s Maple Leaf Lounges at Toronto’s Pearson or Vancouver’s international airports. Travellers at Pearson who have access to Air Canada Cafe can use the system as well. The system will be rolled out to other Canadian airports, but there is no specific timeline, Air Canada said in an email to the National Post. Travellers have to use the app to upload a passport photo followed by a selfie in order to create what the airline calls a “digital profile.” The profile contains “only your selfie, a unique identifier, and details from your passport,” the airline said. “Your facial biometrics are immediately deleted and will not remain part of your digital profile,” per Air Canada. “When you present your face to a camera at certain airport identification checkpoints, a faceprint will be created from your live facial image to compare with faceprints in the day-of-travel gallery. If there is a match, you may board your flight or enter the Maple Leaf Lounge or Air Canada Café. The faceprint from your live camera image is instantaneously deleted.” The airline said it is not affiliated with any government-sponsored programs, such as NEXUS. No, the system is not mandatory. “Customers must opt in to use digital ID,” Air Canada told the National Post. If a phone is stolen and someone uses it to try to board a flight, that person would be unsuccessful. “The camera at the boarding gate scans the passenger’s face, and this must match to the customer’s digital profile created on their phone,” Air Canada told the National Post. “Additionally, data given to Air Canada via Digital ID is only used to satisfy the government requirement to confirm ID prior to boarding. This technology satisfies that requirement in a more seamless way for customers. The data is not used for any other purpose.” Facial recognition technology is used by many other airports around the world, including the United States, Australia, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the United States said they use facial ID technology for screening at select airports, according to the TSA’s website . On Monday, Chancellor Kathaleen St. Jude McCormick turned aside a request from Musk’s lawyers to reverse a ruling she announced in January that had thrown out the compensation plan. The judge ruled then that Musk effectively controlled Tesla’s board and had engineered the outsize pay package during sham negotiations . Lawyers for a Tesla shareholder who sued to block the pay package contended that shareholders who had voted for the 10-year plan in 2018 had been given misleading and incomplete information. In their defense, Tesla’s board members asserted that the shareholders who ratified the pay plan a second time in June had done so after receiving full disclosures, thereby curing all the problems the judge had cited in her January ruling. As a result, they argued, Musk deserved the pay package for having raised Tesla’s market value by billions of dollars. McCormick rejected that argument. In her 103-page opinion, she ruled that under Delaware law, Tesla’s lawyers had no grounds to reverse her January ruling “based on evidence they created after trial.” On Monday night, Tesla posted on X, the social media platform owned by Musk, that the company will appeal. The appeal would be filed with the Delaware Supreme Court, the only state appellate court Tesla can pursue. Experts say a ruling would likely come in less than a year. “The ruling, if not overturned, means that judges and plaintiffs’ lawyers run Delaware companies rather than their rightful owners — the shareholders,” Tesla argued. Later, on X, Musk unleashed a blistering attack on the judge, asserting that McCormick is “a radical far left activist cosplaying as a judge.” Legal authorities generally suggest that McCormick’s ruling was sound and followed the law. Charles Elson, founding director of the Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware, said that in his view, McCormick was right to rule that after Tesla lost its case in the original trial, it created improper new evidence by asking shareholders to ratify the pay package a second time. Had she allowed such a claim, he said, it would cause a major shift in Delaware’s laws against conflicts of interest given the unusually close relationship between Musk and Tesla’s board. “Delaware protects investors — that’s what she did,” said Elson, who has followed the court for more than three decades. “Just because you’re a ‘superstar CEO’ doesn’t put you in a separate category.” Elson said he thinks investors would be reluctant to put money into Delaware companies if there were exceptions to the law for “special people.” Elson said that in his opinion, the court is likely to uphold McCormick’s ruling. The CPI(M) on Sunday demanded the immediate withdrawal of an election rule amendment preventing public inspection of certain electronic documents such as CCTV camera and webcasting footage. In a statement, the CPI(M) Polit Bureau expressed its strong objection to the amendment, restricting the access of political parties and candidates to electronic records, including video and other digital trails. Based on the recommendation of the Election Commission (EC), the Union Law Ministry on Friday amended Rule 93(2)(a) of the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, to restrict the type of "papers" or documents open to public inspection. The CPI(M) said these steps were initially introduced by the EC in consultation with political parties to ensure greater transparency, and described as "retrograde" the move to amend the rule. Proper consultations were not carried out with political parties on the issue, it alleged. "Media reports suggest that the government held consultations with the Election Commission of India while drafting the new rules. However, the Election Commission's reported concurrence was not preceded by any consultation with political parties, contrary to the established precedents over the years," the CPI(M) said. "The government's argument, which questions the locus standi of the petitioner on the conduct of the electoral process, is specious. This approach completely excludes political parties' involvement in the procedures to be followed," the Left party said. Cites Tripura case The CPI(M) said its experience, particularly during the Lok Sabha elections in Tripura, showed that charges of rigging led to the examination of videographic records within polling booths, ultimately resulting in repolls being announced in almost half the polling booths across both constituencies. "In this era, where technology is an integral part of the electoral process, the government's move represents a retrograde step," it said. "The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M), therefore, demands the immediate withdrawal of the proposed amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules," it added. According to Rule 93, all "papers" related to elections shall be open to public inspection. The amendment inserts "as specified in these rules" after "papers". Law Ministry and EC officials separately explained that a court case was the "trigger" behind the amendment. The Punjab and Haryana High Court, in the recent Mahmoud Pracha vs EC case, had directed sharing of all documents related to the Haryana Assembly elections, including treating CCTV camera footage as permissible under Rule 93(2), with Pracha. While documents such as nomination forms, appointment of election agents, results and election account statements are mentioned in the Conduct of Election Rules, electronic documents such as CCTV camera footage, webcasting footage and video recording of candidates during the Model Code of Conduct period are not covered. An EC functionary said, "There have been instances where such electronic records have been sought, citing the rules. The amendment ensures that only papers mentioned in the rules are available for public inspection and any other document which has no reference in the rules is not allowed for public inspection." EC functionaries said the misuse of CCTV camera footage from inside polling booths could compromise voter secrecy. They also said the footage could be used to generate fake narrative using AI. American rugby sevens star Ilona Maher will join 15-a-side club Bristol in January in a bid to play in next year's women's Rugby World Cup, the English club announced on Monday. Maher, 28, helped the USA to a bronze medal at this summer's Olympic Games in Paris and is the sport's most popular player on social media. "This is a huge coup to be able to bring Ilona Maher to Bristol Bears on a short-term deal," Bristol head coach Dave Ward said.
